The past few classes the Montreal Massacre has been brought up in discussion, In those discussions it also gets brought up whether or not the issue of gender violence has improved. My first instinct was to respond with a yes it has but after more thought I was startled to realize that it hasn't at all. not only are we as a society still dealing with issues such a spousal abuse and acquaintance or date rape but even issues of mass violence against women have not been eliminated from society.
Take for example an event in the United States this October that made headlines all over the globe 32 year old Charles Carl Roberts walked into a one room Amish school house and shot and killed 5 girls execution style after asking the male students to leave the class room. This was a chilling reminder of the events that occurred at L'Ecole Polytechnique less then 20 years earlier.
What in our society makes crimes against females so much more common then crimes against males? Especially violent crimes such as these? I know that men are sexually assaulted and are victims of these types of crimes, Just today I read that the parents of a recently found kidnapped boy believes he was abused. But whens the last time you heard of females being asked to leave a room while the males were shot ? I'm yet to hear of this occurring.
The other thing that got me in class today was a video on date rape . . . This has been a topic that always gets to me. But what gets to me the most is when guys come up with he excuse of "oh well she said no but didn't mean it" or "well look how she was dressed she was asking for it" Should females be expected to wear burkas just to avoid the misconception that they want to get laid? I'm sorry I like to look decent when I leave my room, I like to show people that I respect myself and take time into making myself look decent I don't think I should be penalized for that.
I'm going to end this before I become very angry and start to sound hateful and immature.
"Get off of my bed
Yeah, thats what I said
Did i not tell you that I'm not like that
Girl the one who throws it all away
Did you think that I was gonna give it up to
You this time"
